There is a lot of variety in the way manufacturers detail the technical attributes of their products. We have tried to take the most common measurements and assemble an ‘apples to apples’ comparison. See the notes below in ‘Measurements’ The photographs and drawings are from the manufacturers’ websites and are not shown in any consistent scale.

The motors are organized in alphabetical order by manufacturer and then by power of motor within that manufacturer’s listing. In the interests of user friendliness, we have bunched the short (S) and long shaft (L) models together, and for some manufacturers have also bunched the range of motors, mainly because that is how those manufacturers display them on their websites.

The blue links will connect you to the manufacturer’s entire website, the page for the motor/s being detailed, and in some cases, a link to download a brochure. At the bottom of the page is a sortable and searchable table of all the information. While the page can be viewed on a mobile device, there is a lot of information. We encourage you to view on a desk or laptop browser for maximum legibility and flexibility.

We welcome any input you may have to make this guide better – a different grouping, perhaps we have left out a motor or are unaware of a manufacturer. If you do have a suggestion, correction or improvement, use the Contact Form at the bottom of the page.

kW • Voltage • HP: kW is the kW rating provided by the manufacturer. Most websites do not indicate whether it is input or output kW. When it is indicated, we took the larger of the two, usually the input kW Voltage is most often referred on the sites as ‘Voltage’. Some indicate nominal or peak, and some use the term ‘vdc’. In those cases we have used the nominal rating and indicated it as such. HP : is ‘HorsePower equivalent’ so that you can get an idea of the power of the motor in comparison to a HP rating you might be more familiar with. Where available, these measurements come from the manufacturer’s website, and different manufacturers measure the HP in different ways. Some even use metric horsepower, which is slightly different from imperial horsepower. Again, we have tried to make it as apples to apples as possible. (For general guidance, 1kW is round one and a third HP 1kW=1.3HP, or the reverse is that 1HP is around three quarters of a kW: 1 HP = .75kW). Some manufacturers do not use HP as a measurement but instead provide specifications for torque, thrust and RPMs. In those cases, and where possible, we have used standard conversion formulas to obtain a HP rating. A word about Static Thrust: Some boat owners are familiar with the term “Static Thrust’ as a yardstick for measuring fossil fuel engines. Very few electric boat manufacturers use this term or supply this information, so in the interests of ‘apples to apples’ comparisons, we have not included it. Range and Running Time: We have not included estimates of range or running time because it depends on too many factors: battery size (sometimes type also), water conditions, speed, etc. The exceptions are for the ePropulsion and Torqeedo models which have batteries from the manufacturers specifically matched to the motors and therefore provide estimates on their websites. Weight and Length: are in metric. 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds, ( a 15kg motor = 33 lb), 1 centimetre = 2.54 inch (63 cm shaft = 25″)

Price: These prices are intended as a guide, to give an idea of comparative pricing, not as quotes for the products. The information was taken from a variety of sources. If the manufacturer has a suggested list price, it is noted. Otherwise, information came from dealer websites. In some cases we could not find a dealer price and we have contacted the manufacturer for a MSRP. These will be added as they arrive. PRICES ARE FOR MOTORS ALONE and do not include batteries (even for ePropulsion and Torqeedo). All prices are in $US because everyone is familiar enough with it to convert price to their own currency.

Battery Glossary: AGM: Absorbent Glass Mat (lead acid) • VRLA: Valve Regulated Sealed Lead Acid • Li-ion: Lithium Ion • LiPo: Lithium ion polymer • LiFePO: Lithium-iron-phosphate

Aquamot was founded in 2003 by engineer Siegmund Hammerstrom and has grown to be a leading manufacturer of electric motors. They have outboard and pod motors from 1.1 kW to 25kW. Covered below are the 11kW to 25kW motors. Measurement: Aquamot uses a power measurement of “comp. thrust comb engine. (PS)” Which we are taking to mean “comparable thrust to a combustion engine (PS)” PS is the German abbreviation for a metric horsepower: PferdeStärke and we have used this for the HP figure.

Aquawatt founder Dieter Seebacher has been building electric boats since 1989 and the company is now truly a 360 degree firm, making boats (from small inflatables and barges to runabouts and  sleepers), inboard motors, outboard motors and batteries.  Propellers are sold separately from the motors and are matched to the motor and usage.

Bellmarine has a history going back to 1999 and involves a motor manufacturer merging with a battery accessory manufacturer and then being purchased by Transfluid, a large scale industrial motor manufacturer. Perhaps for this reason, it is a very modular system and difficult to compare with other outboard motors and almost impossible to price compare. This is compounded because the Bellmairne outboard is essentially a saildrive system bolted on to the back of a boat. Having said that, these are the specifications on the Bellmarine website. Measurement: Bellmarine does not provide any HP or thrust information, but focusses on RPMs and propeller size. HP cannot be calculated without torque specifications, which are not available on the Bellmarine website or in brochures.

EClass Rechargeable Boats is an Australian company that has tested and developed a system using electric motors as the powerhead on lower units and casings of standard fossil fuel outboards. The motors can be programmed to adjust/increase power. Motors can be purchased alone or in a package with a matched lithium-ion battery package. They also have 3kW and 4kW models, see our Guide to Outboards Under 5kW.

ePropulsion was  founded in 2012 by three engineers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).  The company continues to have a strong engineering culture where each engineer is individually responsible for creating as much value for users as possible. ePropulsion also offers two outboard models under 5kW.

e-Tech is a subsidiary of Starboats, which is also a custom yacht builder. Like the Bellmarine motors, the e-Techs are essentially sailing pod drives that can be attached to the stern of a boat rather than running through the hull. They use in-water motors in aluminum casing. Measurement: E-Tech does not use HP, but has information on minimum RPMs and

Flux Marine outboards were winner of the ‘Best New Green Product’ at the 2021 Newport International Boat Show. The company was founded by mechanical engineers graduating from Princeton University. Flux offers 3 models – the 15HP, 40HP and 70HP. A 100HOP model is also available, use the contact form on the Flux Website. Motors can be ordered with a $100 refundable deposit for delivery in 2022.

Golden Motor has been a manufacturer of high power electric motors and controllers since 2007. Their EZ Outboard brand offers a line of trolling motors and two higher power outboards of 6.5 and 105.kW.

Huracan was founded at the beginning of 2012 in Venice. Since then its goal has been to build entirely electric marine motors, non polluting, highly performative and more reliable than those already on the market. The outboard motors come in two models: Speed and Light. The Light version, as seen in the photos, is shorter, and also comes with two options regarding attachment to the transom. A regular tilt version and, the vertical lift version, shown in the Light photo below, in which the the motor slides up and down vertically while keeping its angle unchanged with respect to the transom.

Karvin is a Czech Republic company that focuses its efforts exclusively on electric outboard. It also offers a motor smaller than 5kW.

Krautler is a long-established Austrian manufacturer of industrial electric motors. They began construction of electric boat motors in the 80’s mainly because they could not find a product that would live up to the standards of founder Oswald Kräutler. They continue to make electric motors for industrial and ship use and have a wide range of motors for smaller recreational power and sailboats.

LGM stands for Leo Greentier Marine, a division of Leo Motors, a Korean company responsible for that country’s first high-speed electric vehicle. LGM stands for Leo Greentier Marine, which was a division of Leo Motors, a Korean company responsible for that country’s first high-speed electric vehicle. In March of 2020 the company changed its name to Electrine and is now focusing on electric marine propulsion. It is difficult to compare the LGM outboards to the others on this list using information available from their website because the company appears to measure performance using different criteria. We have tried to get in touch with them a few times to get more information but have not yet heard back.

The innovative Navigaflex motor has a Patent Pending design in which the motor itself retracts and pivots and can attached to the boat as an outboard or inboard motor. The motor is made with a minimum of parts, a light construction and is adaptable to all boat hulls. The standard motor can also be ordered with a “booster” to double the power for up to 2 minutes.

They currently have two motors, the Stream 1 and Stream 2.

Torqeedo is the leading manufacturer of electric outboards in the world. The company was founded in 2004 by Dr Christoph Ballin and Dr Friedrich Böbel when they decided they could build a better electric motor than the one on the boat Dr. Ballin had just purchased. The company offers trolling motors, inboards, outboards and pod motors and works with BMW’s battery division as well as partnering with many of the world’s premier boat designers and manufacturers.

Thanks from Austria for these more than useful and professionaly researched and presented informations. BR Wolfgang

Thank you. Glad you have found it helpful!

Thanks from Norway. Very nice, and the first real collection of different brands that I’ve seen. Regards, Pelle

Great info. Thanks. The cost of an electric motor compared to a standard petrol is crazy money. Can’t justify the massive cost to go electric yet.

You have the most informative website I’ve ever seen, factual, direct and well explained. Unfortunately all of the motors shown are out of my price range, (I have rolls Royce expectations and mini cash), that said, if I ever win the lottery I would put great faith in your website. Thankyou for your explanation and obvious amounts of time given and wish you well for the future, regards Rob (England)

Very nice to have all of this information here!

I’m having a hard time finding comprehensive surveys of reliability. I think it would be phenomenally useful to allow me to easily see and sort by how reliable the manufacturer _thinks_ their motor is: sort by warranty length.

Evoy in Norway now makes an awesome electric outboard.

Looks like in the area of 30-45KW we don’t have a big choice in Europe – overpriced Torqeedo or Aquawatt. Would be glad to see bigger competition.

Excellent resource – thanks for compiling this list

Excellent. This is also a great guide to determine a potentially much less expensive DIY approach. Used outboard motors may be converted, with a bit of patience. As for the ICE cost comparison: happy hour cruises are very peaceful with electric.

Reviewing from Australia this information has been highly informative and has abled me to enquire more specifically to manufacturers around the world. Much gratitude for the compilation of information.
