The Bottom Line: What is a EV6? The EV6 is a battery electric compact crossover, with 4 doors and a rear hatchback lift gate, built and sold by Kia. It is considered a family car, that skirts the line between a crossover and a hatchback, and is in the compact SUV class.

Sleek, sporty, futuristic, and all electric, nothing else looks like it on the road today. The Kia EV6 has seating for 5 people, the front seats are plush and nicely contoured, and there’s ample head and legroom for taller occupants. Even though Kia calls the EV6 a crossover, it rides low to the ground, dropping its center of gravity and aiding handling.

This RWD rear wheel drive model has a 168 kW electric motor with 225 HP horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Electrical power comes from a 77.4 kWh Lithium Ion battery with 310 miles of range. Combined fuel economy is rated at 117 MPGe, and the average charging time is 8.7 hours on a 240 volt level 2 charger. The car also has an on board power generator for V2L, and can be charged at an ultra fast DC charger at 800 volts.

With this car you have vehicle-to-load capability, also known as V2L. Simply put, this feature allows the batteries in electric vehicles to power things external to the car. When we get the next power outage with PG&E, you can plug this Kia into your house to run the lights, refrigerator, TV, computers, etc. right from the power supply on board the car. Basically if your new EV electric vehicle has V2L, you can forget about a generator, and use the car as a mobile 120 volt power source, with a V2L whole house connector.

This week Kia sent me a 2022 Kia EV6 GT-Line RWD All Electric SUV to test drive and review. The base window sticker starts at $51,200 for this GT model. The options on the test car are: the special paint for $695, and the GT-Line suede seat package for $295. The total MSRP manufacture suggested retail price, including the $1,215 destination charge is: $53,405.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the total out the door and in your garage purchase price came to: $60,081. This price is right in the ball park, as the average all electric vehicle transaction price is at $66,000 now, and rising daily. For $60 Grand your getting one of the most up to date, technology advanced, all electric, compact crossover SUV’s, that are for sale in the United States today.

The Kia EV6 GT features automatic pop out outside door handles, GT exterior and interior unique styling, LED ambient lighting, head up display, a wide sunroof, auto dimming rear view mirror with HomeLink, a surround view monitor, parking collision reverse avoidance assist, smart cruise control with machine learning, forward collision avoidance assist, and highway driving assist level 2.

These safety options are added to the standard driver assisted technology that include: blind spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross traffic collision assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, parking distance warning in forward and reverse, safe exit assist and highway driving assist. The EV6 GT has the highest level of safety and technology available in a compact crossover SUV for only $51,200 on the window sticker.

Comfort and convenience are covered starting with: dual 12.3″ HD display screens, vegan leather seating materials, Android Auto, Apply Car Play and SiriusXM HD radio, smart navigation with cruise control and stop and go, a smart key with push button start, dual zone climate control, a smart power tailgate, a wireless phone charger, heated and ventilated front seats with power lumbar supports, and a rear occupant alert system.

This Kia EV6 has all the bells and whistles that you would expect in an EV that costs twice as much. Electric cars now come with the tech, comfort, and safety that were only available on luxury cars in the $100K range. Today you can get all of that, and more, for only $60,000 in a 2022 Kia EV6 GT, which is a great buy in the EV class.
