An electric car looks almost the same as a regular car. Although, an electric car works completely differently. There is more distinction than you know. This blog explains the differences between these two types of cars.

Anyone who sees an electric car on the road, will not easily realize that it works completely differently than a regular car. In fact, the operation of an electric car is much simpler that the operation of a regular car. This is because of the structure of an electric car, which has a different electric architecture. It’s a specially designed architecture, which we also call a ‘platform’. Below is more information about how the electric car works.

The propulsion of an electric car is provided by an electric motor. This is connected directly – that is, without the intervention of a gearbox or clutch – to the drive shafts. The electric motor draws its energy from a powerful battery. In addition, the necessary electronics are present to take care of charging the battery. Such an electric drive is thus very different from that of a fuel car.

There we are dealing with a combustion engine, alternator, battery, starter motor, gearbox, clutch, exhaust, fuel tank, and much more. So an electric powertrain contains far fewer mechanical parts than a gasoline- or diesel-powered car.

Since even the dimensions of the important components are quite different from a conventional car, the architecture of an electric car is also different. Therefore, a special electric architecture is developed for most electric cars. There are exceptions to this, such as the popular Hyundai Kona Electric, the Kia e-Niro, Audi e-tron, and the Mercedes EQA and EQV which are derived from internal combustion engine models. But modern electric cars such as the Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model 3, and Ford Mustang Mach-E are built on a so-called “electric platform” suitable only for electric cars. The architecture, or base of an electric car, includes the following components:

One of the most important aspects of an electric car is charging the battery. That charging can be done in two ways. You can normally charge or fast charge. Normal charging is the most common form of charging and is done via what is known as AC charging. This can be done at a normal public charging station or via the wall charger or charging station at home or at work.

Fast charging goes a little differently. This is because the so-called “fast charging stations,” popularly known as fast chargers or DC chargers, already supply direct voltage. They do so with an enormous amount of power, up to 350 kW. The power electronics are located in the charging station itself. In the car, the current only passes through a DC/DC converter that converts the charging voltage to the correct voltage. With EV charging stations dataset you can see where you can charge your car. There is an EV charging infrastructure available on many apps and websites.
