Everything electric boats and boating

The Southampton Boat Show 2022 started late last week and carries on through to Sunday, September 25. Electric boats, motors and accessories are growing in importance at every boat show everywhere and the #SIBS2022 is no exception. Here’s the Plugboats look at some of the companies at this year’s event.

The most notable aspect of the Southampton show in terms of electric boating is the range of sailing boat and yacht manufacturers who now have electric propulsion as an option or standard.

That doesn’t necessarily mean those companies will be showing their electric boats or electric boat options at Southampton, but it does mean that if you are attending the show, you can ask about them. Or you can click the Logo Tiles at the bottom of this article to visit their websites.

Spirit Yachts Some of the most elegant boats on water are by Spirit Yachts, who were commissioned to design and build Geist, a 34 metre (111 ft) sailing superyacht launched in 2021 that was outfitted with Torqeedo’s 100,000th electric motor.

Geist won two Boat International Design and Innovation Awards and the same owner then asked Spirit co-founder Sean McMillan to work with BAR Technologies on an equally stunning  hydrofoil speedboat, the Electric Flyer.

Spirit is showing two new sailing yachts with electric motors at the Southampton show.

The 44ft (13.4m) Spirit 44CR has a lightweight (65kgs) Oceanvolt ServoProp15 sail drive with hydrogeneration and battery bank with 57.6kWh of capacity. The Spirit 30 has a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 FP electric drive system powered by lithium ion batteries that can be recharged with hydrogeneration, shore power or shore power or through solar panels mounted over the cockpit cover. Also showing at Southampton is Sweden’s Arcona Yachts, who accomplished a first for series-produced sailing yachts earlier this year: an electric motor as standard, not an option. The Arcona 415 has a 15 kW electric propulsion system from Oceanvolt, using itsaward-winning ServoProp hydrogeneration capabilities and 19kWh battery pack.

X-Yachts, one of Denmark’s best known sailing yacht manufacturers, launched their first electric propulsion model in in June, a 49 foot X4⁹E. It is also equipped with the Oceanvolt ServoProp and two 10kW electric saildrives that run on 48V.

Another sailboat manufacturer using the Oceanvolt system is Salona, who make electric propulsion available on a number of model. Their Salona 46 won the Best Green Boat Award about this time last year at the 2021 Newport International Boat Show.

While Fountaine-Pajot does not have an electric sailboat in production yet, they are doing all the right research to prepare. Back in 2019 they were working with Volvo Penta on an electric saildrive fitted into their Lucia 40 sailing catamaran, and they also have been gathering research data on a hydrogen fuel cell onboard generator from EODev installed in a Samaran 59. The plan is that the Aura 51 will be the first model to be offered with electric propulsion.

Coming all the way from Capetown, South Africa, to exhibit at the Southampton show is HOP Yachts with their new Hop 30 catamaran. The Hop 30 is designed with a single sail to make sailing as easy as can be for couples or families with young children perhaps not yet able to help out with a full rigging. The stability of a catamaran also adds to the friendly feel and there is no noise ever (other than the wind and waves) thanks to twin E-Propulsion Evo 6.0 pod drives with hydrogenation that are also solar panel ready.

On the power boat side of things, one of the fastest-growing boat brands in the world, Finland’s Axopar, will be exhibiting. Electric boat enthusiasts will want to find out more about their partnership with Evoy, announced at the Cannes Yachting Festival and the electric Axopar they had out on the Mediterranean waters.

Pixii is a home grown electric boat manufacturer from Mudeford – about 25 kilometres from the Show. This will give the locals a chance to check out the company’s SP800 flagship model, an aluminum hulled dayboat paired with electric jet drives, perfect for shallow waters. The drives have 120kW of power and the company estimates a range of about 30Nm at 20 knots.

Torqeedo will have a booth at the show, also Lynch, displaying the axial flux ‘pancake’ motors. Thse two long time electric boat moto companies will be joined by a new distributor of Bellmarine products – Engines Plus.

Engines Plus has more than 10 years of experience in marine propulsion and diesel generators. Working with MIT driveline specialists, they will be showcasing a technology that combines Engines Plus marine generators with Bellmarine electric motors in a range of series hybrid solutions.

The Arcona 415 is one of the first series produced sailing yachts with electric propulsion as standard.

Electric propulsion is already available across all the Arcona fleet as an upgrade option and Arcona Yachts is proud to have the largest fleet of electric ‘zero emissions’ yachts on the water, the first being the Arcona 380Z launched in 2015.

Axopar has joined forces with Evoy motors to produce Evoy electric version of their Axopar 25. Jan-Erik Viitala, Founding Partner of Axopar, says “Our partnership with Evoy is a perfect example of two great companies, on a joint mission, to expand the boating community and offer new ways of mobility for the future.”

UK and Eire distributors for Sole Diesel, Engines Plus, discovered that Sole was using Bellmarine and Transfluid electric propulsion, which ignited the idea of how this technology could be combined with Engines Plus marine generators to deliver an OEM range of series hybrid solutions.

A new route to market

As a partner and official reseller of Bellmarine, MIT had an established supply route to market for commercial vessels and saw the opportunity for a partnership with Engines Plus to serve the leisure marine sector. Similarly, Engines Plus had identified this development in technology and growth in the electric market. With their extensive knowledge of the leisure market, a partnership with MIT was formed.

Fischer Panda has manufactured electric and hybrid drive systems for houseboats, motor boats and yachts for more than 15 years now.

Electric drives from Fischer Panda are perfect for cruising on waters where conventional combustion engines are not permitted, both for monohull and multihull boats with one or two drives.

The Fliteboard™ eFoil gives the sensation of flying over water. Fliteboard carves like a snowboard in fresh powder, but with the freedom to ride anywhere, anytime, without wind or waves. It’s fast, quiet, and emission free.

Fountaine Pajot is working on the deployment of electric motors for its sailing catamarans. This project should see the light of day in 2022 with the installation of electric motors on the Aura 51, the new 51-foot catamaran designed by Fountaine Pajot.

The Garmin Force trolling motor has the power to move you from spot to spot more quickly and stand up better to winds and currents — and it’s still whisper quiet. The high-efficiency brushless motor operates at either 36 V or 24 V. When running at 24 V, it delivers comparable thrust to our competitors’ 36-V motors.

Apart from unplugging the shore power cable, there’s very little else you need to do before setting sail. Our new HopYacht 30 catamaran makes sailing more relaxed, by simplifying the things that make traditional yachts feel like hard work.

Equipped with electric sail drives not only eliminates fossil fuel pollution, there’s also no noise pollution. The motors are whisper quiet and re-charged by solar panels on the cabin top, plus hydro-generation whilst under sail. HopYacht is truly eco-sensitive.
